Devastating trauma and loss can profoundly impact an individual's sense of hope. When people endure trauma—whether from the death of a loved one, the breakdown of relationships, or significant life challenges—they may find themselves grappling with feelings of despair, isolation, and a disconnection from their sense of self, others, and even their faith.
Loss can take many forms, including the loss of identity, sense of belonging, and safety. For example, someone who has experienced a traumatic event may feel as though their former self has been shattered, leading to an identity crisis where they question their worth and purpose. Similarly, losing a sense of belonging—whether due to a breakup, the death of a close friend, or relocating away from a supportive community—can create a deep sense of loneliness and longing for connection.
Trauma can also undermine feelings of safety, both internally and externally. A person who has experienced violence or betrayal may struggle to trust others or feel secure in their environment. This lack of safety can extend to their relationship with God, causing them to grapple with feelings of abandonment or doubt, which further diminishes their sense of hope.
Examples of trauma include:
1. Loss of a Loved One: Grieving the death of a family member can evoke overwhelming feelings of emptiness and sorrow, challenging one’s beliefs about love, connection, and the future.
2. Abuse or Neglect: Experiencing physical, emotional, or sexual abuse can instill deep-seated fears and anxieties, making it difficult to feel safe and hopeful in relationships.
3. Major Life Changes: Events such as divorce or job loss can disrupt an individual’s sense of identity and security, leading to profound uncertainty about the future.
In these challenging contexts, the importance of hope cannot be overstated. Hope acts as a guiding light, allowing individuals to envision a path forward, even amidst pain. It empowers clients to explore their feelings, reconnect with their values, and take steps toward healing.
At Hope to Share Life, Mary Beth provides compassionate counseling for adults and couples navigating trauma and grief. Guided by her Christian faith, she views her work as a mission to empower individuals on their healing journeys. As Mary Beth's journey at Hope to Share Life evolved, she recognized a profound opportunity to extend her mission of hope to a broader community. With this vision in mind, she is thrilled to introduce Collective Hope, a counseling collective that unites independent mental health professionals who share her values and commitment to spreading hope through their work.
Collective Hope provides a welcoming space for counselors dedicated to supporting a diverse range of clients, including children as young as four, adults, couples, and families. Together, they address a wide array of mental health challenges, such as chronic illness, cancer support, addiction (including alcohol, drugs, and pornography), complex trauma, anxiety, panic disorders, depression, behavioral issues, and relationship dynamics, among others.
Each therapist at Collective Hope brings unique training, skills, and experience, employing a variety of therapeutic approaches—including Play-based Therapies, Somatic Experiencing, EMDR, CBT, DBT, IFS, PCT, MBCT, EFT, and Gottman methods—ensuring comprehensive care tailored to clients of all ages and backgrounds.
At Collective Hope, intentional collaboration fosters a rich exchange of knowledge among peers and embodies the practice of self-compassion. By actively caring for themselves and one another, the counselors model this compassion in their work with clients.
Mary Beth believes that nurturing relationships among colleagues equips them to share hope more effectively with those they counsel. This supportive environment strengthens their connections, creating a foundation of well-being that enhances the care they provide. In a field that can often feel isolating and exhausting,
Mary Beth is committed to prioritizing the well-being of her peers. She hopes that this model of care radiates outwards, fostering a compassionate environment for everyone involved. The shared goal at Collective Hope is to uplift one another as they spread life-giving emotional and mental hope to as many people as possible.
By joining forces, they amplify their impact and cultivate a nurturing space where everyone can find the support they need to foster resilience, connection, and hope for all.
